Patisserie Valerie

imagePatisserie Valerie

Patisserie Valerie is a chain of cafés that operate in the United Kingdom. The chain specialises in hand-made cakes, and its menu includes continental breakfasts, lunches and teas and coffees.

Patisserie Valerie was first opened in 1926 in Frith Street, central London by the Belgian, Madame Valerie. It remained there until bombing during World War II resulted in its move to nearby Old Compton Street.

The Scalzo brothers bought it in 1987 from descendants of the founder, and grew the business to nine branches, including shops in Piccadilly and Kensington In 2006 Luke Johnson's Risk Capital Partners acquired the Scalzo brothers' controlling stake in the company. At the time of the acquisition, Luke Johnson said:

We have significant experience of rolling out successful food and drink concepts, including Pizza Express, Strada and Giraffe. Patisserie Valerie is a much-loved institution with tremendous heritage. We are confident there are many upscale locations across Britain's cities that would love the authentic pastries, cakes and savouries supplied by Patisserie Valerie.

The chain has expanded rapidly since 2006, growing from eight shops in 2006 to 124 as of November 2015 and one new shop in Debenhams in Blanchardstown Town Centre in Dublin, Ireland in 2017.

In April 2014 the company announced plans to raise £33m on the London Alternative Investment Market, using the sum to reduce its debt.

Paul (bakery)

imagePaul

Paul is a French chain of bakery/café restaurants established in 1889 in the town of Croix, in Nord, by Charlemagne Mayot. It specializes in serving French products including breads, crêpes, sandwiches, macarons, soups, cakes, pastries, coffee, wine, and beer.

Paul belongs to Groupe Holder, which also owns the French luxury bakery Ladurée.

Boulangeries Paul SAS has its global head office in Marcq-en-Barœul, in Greater Lille, in France, and operates in 29 countries.

Julien Holder married Suzanne, the granddaughter of Charlemagne Mayot. The Holders opened their own bakery in Lille, in 1935. The Holders and their son Francis took over a better known bakery-pâtisserie owned by the Paul family, and kept the "Paul" name.

Following the death of his father in 1958, Francis Holder took over the family bakery in Lille. With his mother's assistance he expanded the business and when the Nouvelles Galeries opened in 1965, he immediately offered to supply their bread. Under the "Moulin Bleu" Francis Holder provided bread to Auchan and Monoprix from his bakery in Lambersart, and by 1970 he was able to purchase an abandoned industrial site at La Madeleine, in the suburbs of Lille, transforming it into an enormous bakery.

The installation in 1972 of a wood stove at the original Lille bakery proved so popular that, as the Paul chain expanded into French malls in Paris and other major French cities, it was incorporated into the general layout. Apart from a change of livery in 1993 (to the now-signature black), the layout and visual aesthetic of Paul stores has not changed.

As of August 2011 there are over 436 franchised Paul bakery/café restaurants (326 in France and 127 in 27 other countries) in France, Spain, Azerbaijan, Belgium, United Kingdom, Qatar, Czech Republic, South Africa, Turkey, Greece, Romania, Morocco, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Bahrain, Japan, Taiwan, Jordan, China, Egypt, Ukraine, the United States of America, Malaysia and Chile. As of September 2015, Paul also had several bakeries in Almaty, Kazakhstan (both in the city centre and in Shymbulak ski resort).

Pret a Manger

imagePret a Manger

Pret a Manger /ˈprɛt ə ˈmɑːnʒeɪ/ is a sandwich shop chain based in the United Kingdom.

Pret A Manger was founded by Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham. They opened their first Pret A Manger shop in July 1986, located at 173 Victoria Street in London. Beecham and Metcalfe met while studying at University. Their company claims they "created the sort of food they craved but could not find anywhere else."

The name, from the French prêt à manger, meaning ‘ready to eat’, was inspired by a French delicatessen Metcalfe and Beecham saw that had closed down on Hampstead High Street owned by Jeffery Hyman.

The pair pioneered Pret’s menu of freshly made natural food and are still significant shareholders in the company 30 years on.

In 2001, McDonald's bought a 33% non-controlling stake in the USA branch of the company, which they sold in 2008 to private equity firm Bridgepoint Capital, owners of clothing retailer Fat Face.

In 2011, its sales were £377 million.

The menu includes sandwiches, baguettes, pots and desserts, cold drinks, hot drinks, crisps and bakery items, as well as sushi, salads, soups, and cakes.

The company emphasises the use of natural ingredients and advertises all sandwiches are made on the day of purchase in a kitchen at each location (with the stated exception of a few small outlets). Food left unsold at the end of the day is collected by charities. Sandwiches are packaged in paperboard rather than sealed plastic.

Rainbow Coffee House

The Rainbow Coffee House was a famous coffee house located in London's Fleet Street.

It was opened by James Farr in 1657, becoming London's second coffee house.

The Rainbow provided a meeting place for freemasons and French refugee Huguenots who established an information centre there.

The Rainbow was also featured in the furor created by Titus Oates. He accused Sir Philip Lloyd of denying the existence of a popish plot there, finding witnesses from amongst the coffee drinkers to testify against him

In 1719 John Woodward wrote a satire The Two Sosias: Or, the True Dr. Byfield at the Rainbow Coffee-House, to the Pretender in Jermyn-Street

Many notable Huguenots were associated with the Rainbow Coffee House. However, there were also other German and English notable people.

Trew Era Cafe

imageTrew Era Cafe

The Trew Era Café is a non-profit coffeehouse established in March 2015 in Hackney, East London. The café, opened by comedian and activist Russell Brand, was funded by profits from his 2014 book, Revolution.

The café name and logo come from its location on the New Era estate and from Brand's web series, The Trews.

During promotion for his book, Brand stated that he would use the profits to fund a social enterprise to employ former drug users in "abstinence-based recovery" and help them return to work.

The café is located on the New Era council estate, whose residents faced eviction in 2014 when their rents were to be tripled by a new owner, Westbrook Partners. They campaigned against the proposed purchase by Westbrook, and Brand supported and drew attention to the residents' cause. In December 2014, Westbrook backed out and the approximately 100 families of the New Era estate ultimately were able to stay.

In February 2015, work began on the facility, next to a printing shop and a barbershop. The location was formerly a clothes shop but was empty for some time. The café opened its doors on the morning of 26 March 2015, with approximately 200 people coming for the event.

Brand stated that he hopes to have a chain of self-supporting social enterprises. On the café opening, he told the crowd, "In this book, I wrote about how the way to change politics is not depending on the existing political class and the existing political system, but for us ourselves to start grassroots movements like what has happened on the New Era estate...this café is going to be run by people in abstinence-based recovery. It's a model which is not for profit, a fully self-supporting new economic enterprise."

As of July 2015, the cafe employed seven recovering addicts, who are paid £9.15 (~$14 USD) per hour, and a manager.

The Troubadour, London

imageThe Troubadour

The Troubadour at 263–267 Old Brompton Road in Earls Court, established in 1954, is one of the last remaining coffee houses of its era in London, with a club room in the cellar famous as one of the primary venues of the British folk revival in the late 1950s and 1960s. The club was one of several London coffee house venues at which notable musicians played; other such venues included Les Cousins and Bunjies.

The club has played host to a number of major artists in various stages of their careers. Notable among these have been:

The club is, however, chiefly associated with folk music. Notable artists appearing under this banner have been:

Many of these acts are captured performing at the venue in the photographs of Alison Chapman McLean.

A key name in the history of the Troubadour is that of Anthea Joseph (1940–1997), who organised many of the folk events at the club and was often credited as "the Manager" of the venue. It is widely reported that when Bob Dylan arrived in London for the first time he was given no instruction other than that of his mentor Pete Seeger to seek out "Anthea at the Troubadour". In 1968 she joined Witchseason Productions as Joe Boyd's assistant.

During Bruce Rogerson's ownership of the Troubadour it had not been used as a music venue for some years, so he asked The Flynn Brothers to manage some music evenings in the downstairs cellar, thereby making it a music club again. The Flynn Brothers revived the folk music scene there by bringing back notable artists such as Martin Carthy, John Renbourn, Davey Graham and Bert Jansch.

The Troubadour's influence was felt around the UK. The Bristol Troubadour Club fulfilled a similar role in the west of England, but with a more bluesy feel.

The Troubadour in Los Angeles was a copy of the London club (it even copied the sign above the door) that opened in 1957 and runs still today. From the beginning it was a much larger venue but with a similar ethos.
