Monica Seles won her first Grand Slam, defeating Steffi Graf in the final, 7–6(8–6), 6–4, saving four set points in the first set tiebreaker. Aged 16 and 6 months, she became the youngest ever Grand Slam Singles winner, only to be surpassed by Martina Hingis seven years later (she won the 1997 Australian Open aged 16 years, 3 months). Seles remains the youngest French Open champion.

Arantxa Sánchez Vicario was the defending champion, but she lost in the second round to Mercedes Paz.

This tournament also saw a semifinal appearance of future world number 1 Jennifer Capriati. Aged only 14 years and 70 days, she became the youngest ever tennis player to reach the French Open semifinals and, following this tournament, the youngest player ever to crack the Top Ten.
