Serena Williams was the defending champion, but she lost in the quarterfinals against Lindsay Davenport. Serena's sister Venus won in the final 6–4, 7–5 against Davenport.

This was also the first Grand Slam which future French Open champion Francesca Schiavone competed in the main draw.
