Venus Williams was the two-time defending champion, but she was defeated in the final by her sister Serena, 7–6(7–4), 6–3. Serena claimed the World No. 1 ranking for the first time after winning this tournament. It was her third different Grand Slam title, her first Wimbledon title and her second consecutive in the "Serena Slam".
