2004 summer saw Inter choose a new coach, Roberto Mancini. He came from Lazio, club that sells also several players to Milanese side.Nerazzurri started the season qualyfing for Champions League group phase, but also collected a notable amount of drawn games in league.
Inter, that realized better results in cups made a known comeback (3–2) in a match against Sampdoria, scoring all goals in last 6 minutes. The derby with Milan lost 1–0 broke a positive streak, opened in May 2004. Citizen rivals also knocked out Inter of Champions League, tournament in wich - during the previous "two-legs" match - Mancini's squad had beaten reigning champions of Porto. Conquested a third place in league the win of Coppa Italia dusted off club's trophies room. Final opponent was Roma that, closing a suffering season, gave up to an aggregate of 3–0.
