Agnieszka Radwańska is the defending champion.
The top four seeds (Garbiñe Muguruza, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and Karolína Plíšková) are in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the completion of the first round. Despite Muguruza's retirement in the first round, Halep must reach the final and Svitolina or Plíšková must win the title in order to have a chance at replacing Muguruza as the no. 1 player.

Maria Sakkari, the fourth Wuhan semifinalist, did not have a ranking that qualified her for the main draw. Sakkari withdrew from the qualifying draw as she was still competing in Wuhan.
