Afon Alaw (ship, 1891)

The Afon Alaw was a four-masted sailing ship which served from 1891 until 1918. She had a sister ship, the Afon Cefni. The Afon Alaw was built at Alexander Stephen and Sons in Glasgow, for Hughes & Co based at Menai Bridge in Anglesey.

The ship is named after the river of the same name (Afon Alaw) in Anglesey. She displaced 2,052 gross tons, and was 284 feet long and 42 feet wide. In 1904, she was sold to another Welsh company, from Liverpool, W. Thomas & Sons. It was sold again to a company in Kristiansand, Norway.

In 1918 the Afon Alaw was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, by the German warship SMS Wolf, while on the way to Montevideo, Uruguay.
