The Apple Watch Series 3 is the third-generation model of the Apple Watch, introduced on September 12, 2017, and was released alongside the iPhone 8 on September 22, 2017.
The main new feature of this generation is the built-in LTE cellular connectivity and offers both voice and data communication, including out-of-the-box Apple Music streaming. Antenna functionality (receiving and transmitting elements for LTE and UMTS) is part of the display and the watch features an electronic SIM (eSIM), 1% the size of a standard SIM card, and shares the same mobile number as the user's iPhone. Apple claims 18 hours of battery life. It has a dual-core Apple S3 processor, which Apple claims is 70% faster than the S2. The live demo featured presenter Jeff Williams in a watch-to-watch chat with a team member paddle-boarding on a lake. With support by all four major U.S. cellular carriers, three confirmed $10/month pricing for adding the watch to an iPhone plan. The cellular-capable watch has a red digital crown but the Series 3 device is also available in a non-LTE version.
The Series 3 watch ships with watchOS 4, offering such new functionality as: updated Heart Rate app (including resting and recovery period monitoring), Workout app with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout type, as well as two-way data synchronization with GymKit-integrated cardio fitness equipment expected to start shipping in the fall from companies like Life Fitness, Technogym, Cybex, Schwinn, MS Artrix, Stair Master and Star Trac. Using the NFC chip, previously used just for Apple Pay, the watch offers gym users convenient one-tap connection to a supported machine, availability subject to the multi-year replacement cycles of gym and rec center cardio equipment.
Even before the product shipped to consumers, several reviewers using pre-production review units reported issues with LTE connectivity and battery life. More specifically, Wi-Fi-to-cellular handoff is unreliable and the device joins unauthenticated WiFi networks, apparently interfering with cellular network connection. Apple acknowledged the issue and said that they are investigating a fix for a future software release. The watchOS 4.0.1 update fixed the issue.
