The Italian Catholic Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano (Latin: Archidioecesis Campobassensis-Boianensis) became an archdiocese in 1973 and a metropolitan see in 1976. The historical diocese of Boiano was renamed diocese of Boiano-Campobasso in 1927. It was suffragan to the archdiocese of Benevento.

After the death of Bishop Nicolò Rosetti (elected in 1774), differences between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Naples prevented the appointment of a successor until 1836, when Giuseppe Riccardi was appointed.
