Bombylius canescens is a species of ' bee flies' belonging to the family Bombyliidae. It is a Palearctic species with a limited distribution in Europe
"Pale tawny haired. Wings with the base and foremargin light brown. Head with numerous long black hairs behind the eyes ; sides of the face and a cross-band under the antennse black haired. Thorax without any black hairs between the humeri and the base of the wings. Femora mainly black".
Flies May to August in open flowery places such as hillsides and valleys, river banks and coastal habitats.The larvae parasitise species of Lasioglossum and Halictus (mining bees).
