Bowstring Lake, Minnesota


Bowstring Lake is an unorganized territory in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,166 at the 2010 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 284.1 square miles (735.9 km²), of which 215.4 square miles (557.8 km²) is land and 68.8 square miles (178.2 km²), or 24.21%, is water.

About half the land area is part of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,203 people, 378 households, and 286 families residing in the unorganized territory. The population density was 5.6 people per square mile (2.2/km²). There were 635 housing units at an average density of 2.9/sq mi (1.1/km²). The racial makeup of the unorganized territory was 36.66% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 61.35% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.16% of the population.

There were 378 households out of which 42.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 19.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 19.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.18 and the average family size was 3.63.
