A post office called Buhl has been in operation since 1900. The city was named for Frank H. Buhl, a businessperson in the mining industry. Buhl was incorporated in 1901.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.56 square miles (9.22 km2); 3.35 square miles (8.68 km2) is land and 0.21 square miles (0.54 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,000 people, 430 households, and 228 families residing in the city. The population density was 298.5 inhabitants per square mile (115.3/km2). There were 496 housing units at an average density of 148.1 per square mile (57.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.7% White, 1.7% African American, 2.1% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.3% of the population.
