Des Buckingham is an English professional football head coach and former footballer. He is the head coach of A-League side Wellington Phoenix.
Born in Cowley, England, Buckingham started his playing career as a goalkeeper, having spells in the youth teams of English sides Reading and Oxford United. A professional career didn't materialise and Buckingham subsequently joined Oxford as a coach, initially coaching the club's Under-9 team prior to having various part-time roles with Oxford. He then spent time with the Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, getting a job there by chance. He then returned to Oxford United and had numerous coaching roles, including first-team coach. In 2013, Buckingham left England for a career in New Zealand after accepting a post with New Zealand Football Championship team WaiBOP United to be their development manager. He later joined Capital Football, working in a similar role as with WaiBOP United.
Ahead of the 2014–15 A-League season, Buckingham joined New Zealand-based club Wellington Phoenix as a part-time goalkeeping coach. After impressing then-manager Ernie Merrick, he was promoted to a full-time assistant coach role. In December 2016, after the departure of Merrick, Buckingham and fellow coach Chris Greenacre became interim coaches of the club. On 1 January 2017, Buckingham was appointed head coach of Wellington Phoenix with Greenacre becoming co-coach.
