Edgar von Gierke

Edgar Otto Conrad von Gierke (9 February 1877, Breslau – 21 October 1945, Karlsruhe) was a German doctor who specialised in glycogen synthesis. This research led him to the discovery of glycogen synthesis type I in 1929.

He received his medical doctorate at Heidelberg University in 1901, and several years later became a prosector at the municipal hospital in Karlsruhe. In 1911 he was named an associate professor of bacteriology at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe.

He married Julie Braun in 1912 and fathered four children.

Glycogen storage disease type I is named for him, commonly known as Von Gierke disease.
