Eric R. George is an American medical doctor and is best known as a hand surgeon. He is the founder and CEO of Omega Hospital and The Hand Center of Louisiana in New Orleans.
Dr. Eric R. George grew up in Huntington, West Virginia as one of four sons, and graduated from Marshall University with a double-major in chemistry and political science. After being accepted to both medical school and law school, George decided to become a medical doctor and was trained in orthopedic hand surgery. George is a graduate of Marshall University's School of Medicine in 1989, completed a General Trauma Surgery Residency at Michigan State University, Dr. George completed a Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Subsequently, Dr. George completed an Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity Reconstructive Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr George is Board certified and holds a certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. Dr George is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans. George has published articles in academic journals including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and The American Surgeon.
George acquired Omega Hospital in 2005, located in Metairie, Louisiana, and begun as a "luxury hospital" in 1999, where "the patient rooms (which are private) are stocked with plush robes, flat-screen TVs, a minibar and a microwave" according to New Orleans Living Magazine. George also owns and runs the Hand Center of Louisiana, where he is an active surgeon. At his facility he also utilizes non-invasive treatment methods that do not require invasive surgery, such as the use of xiaflex enzymes to erode inhibitive tissue build-ups like Dupuytren's contracture.
Dr. George’s expertise is sought by a wide variety of employers, including the New Orleans Saints! Dr. George has operated on 7 of the Saints’ 22 starters, and has consulted with several other players.
Dr George was on the cover and named to the New Orleans Magazine best doctors list August 2015. In the article he talks about one of his toughest cases an Elbow to Wrist reconstruction.
