Felis margarita harrisoni is a subspecies of the sand cat known as the Arabian sand cat that is native to the deserts of the Arabian peninsula and Jordan. Between July 2000 and September 2001, it was also recorded in the central Syrian desert, close to the ruins of Palmyra.
The captive population kept in European zoos is offspring of 18 founders.
