Gaayam (Telugu: గాయం, English:The Wound) is a 1993 Telugu political thriller film, based on the 1980s Vijayawada Gang Warfare. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, and story co-written by himself and Mani Ratnam, the film starred Jagapathi Babu, Revathi, Kota Srinivasa Rao, and Urmila Matondkar in pivotal roles. Upon its release, the film received positive reviews, with six state Nandi Awards, and recorded as Super Hit at the box office.
Durga (Jagapathi Babu) is in love with Anitha (Revathi). He is all set to marry her and settle down in life, but things change when his brother Mohana Krishna (Charan Raj) is killed by Guru Narayan (Kota Srinivasa Rao), the local MLA, and Durga wants to settle the score with the mafia. Anitha does not approve of his way, so she marries a cop. Durga and the cop become enemies of Guru Narayan. He is finally arrested.
The songs were composed by music director Sri. The lyrics were penned by Sirivennela Sitaramasastri. All songs are hit tracks. The song "Cheli Meeda" is lifted from Michael Jackson's song Who Is It.
After the film's huge success, Ram Gopal Varma and Jagapathi Babu planned to release a sequel titled Gaayam 2. Ram Gopal Varma was the producer in the sequel while Praveen Sri was the director. Vimala Raman was the heroine as Kota Srinivasa Rao again plays as the antagonist.
