Gantz: O (styled GANTZ:O) is a 2016 Japanese CGI anime science fiction action film directed by Yasushi Kawamura, produced by Digital Frontier, written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa and based on the manga series Gantz written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It was released in Japan by Toho on October 14, 2016.
People who have just died find themselves in an apartment room with a single black ball at one end. The ball itself is what is identified as Gantz. Now these recently deceased and newly regenerated individuals have to fulfill the objectives set out by Gantz. This entails hunting down aliens; psychotic Men in Black style. They wear plug suits and use timed particle excitement weapons. They fulfill missions or die trying.
The film was originally announced on 14 November 2015 in the December issue of Miracle Jump as an untitled "full 3DCG" Gantz anime film. On 18 April 2016, the title of the movie was revealed to be Gantz: O along with the setting of the movie to be based around the "Osaka" arc of the original manga. Several trailers were released for the film throughout the year, featuring music from Japanese band "dresscodes".
At an event called "GANTZ: O NIGHT ~ @hiroya_oku SHIBUYA Mission ~" ran on 3 August, original Gantz creator Hiroya Oku appeared to discuss the creation of Gantz: O alongside its director Yasushi Kawamura, motion capture performer Asami Katsura, and a real life recreation of the Gantz orb with mimicked text based on the manga. Oku stated that although he'd been dissatisfied with parts of 3DCG films, he was "surprised that the film met [Oku's] ideals".
Gantz: O was released in Japan by Toho on October 14, 2016. The BluRay will be released on Feb 22, 2017.
The film opened across 153 locations and ranked at #6 at the Japanese box office in its opening weekend. As of October 30, 2016, the film has grossed a total of over ¥246 million.
