H. Lakshmi Narasimha (25 July 1904 – 4 July 1972), popularly known as H. L. N. Simha, was an Indian theatre director, film director, actor and screenwriter who worked primarily in Kannada cinema. He is considered to be one of the first filmmakers responsible for fostering the Kannada cinema industry from its earlier silent films to talkie films. After having acted and directed in several silent films and stage plays, Simha wrote, enacted and directed Kannada cinema's first social melodrama talkie-film, Samsara Nauka, an adaptation of his own stage play, in 1936. Following this, he directed and wrote several successful films such as Gunasagari in 1953 and Bedara Kannappa in 1954 for which he received the first ever President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Kannada.
The Karnataka State Film Award for Best Director, for honoring the director of the first best film, was instituted in his honour by the Government of Karnataka in 1967.
