Hamilton County Schools (or Hamilton County Department of Education) is the school district that serves Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA. After a 1995 referendum, the separate Chattanooga City Schools district was merged into the county's in 1997. About 2,300 high school seniors graduated from the system in May 2011.
The Department of Education serves about 43,193 students in Hamilton County using 2,914 teachers at 79 schools.
The Secondary Education Division provides 17 high schools to serve students in grades 9–12.
Students in grades 6–8 are served by 21 middle schools.
Dalewood Middle School is a middle school located in Chattanooga educates students in 6 – 8th grade. The school offers the following athletic extracurricular activities: football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, track, and cheerleading. Approximately 500 students enroll each year. Notable alumni of Dalewood Middle School include Usher Raymond, R&B musician and actor, known professionally as "Usher". Mr. Raymond visited students in February 2014 to recognize honor roll students and encouraged the entire school body to work hard as they prepare for state level testing.
Loftis Middle School is situated in Hixson, and consists of 6 – 8th grades. Brent Eller is the current principal. Loftis Middle was established in 1994 and was open by 1995.
There are 46 Elementary schools serving students in grades K-5.
The system provides four schools to serve special needs students, students at risk, high achievement students, and students with behavioral problems.
