"Highway 40 Blues" was Ricky Skaggs' fifth number one on the country chart and his fifth consecutive number one. The single stayed at number one for one week and spent a total of twelve weeks on the chart.

The song was covered in Spanish as "Blues de la Nacional II" by La Guardia.
