Predecessor | Holden Commodore (VF) |
The Holden Commodore (ZB) will be a mid-sized car produced by Opel in Rüsselsheim, Germany in early 2018. It is the first-iteration of the fifth-generation Commodore platform, and is based on the Opel Insignia and Buick Regal. The range will include Sedan, Sportwagon and Tourer variants.
It is the first Commodore model to be manufactured outside of Australia, following closure of the company's Australian car manufacturing facilities at Elizabeth, South Australia and Fishermans Bend, Victoria on Friday October 20, 2017. It will be the first Commodore in thirty years to come with a four-cylinder engine standard, and the first Commodore in the forty year production to have no V8 option. Holden made the decision to discontinue Australian manufacturing of the Holden Commodore due to falling sales and profit loss.
Development for the ZB Commodore started in 2012, with Holden helping Opel design and develop the next-generation Insignia, catering it to Australian tastes.
Once the car was ready, prototypes were sent to Australia for testing. Holden has now completed over 100,000 km of testing, with engineers tinkering the cars to suit local roads and make it feel like the previous VF Commodore.
It will come with a range of engines including a four-cylinder petrol, four-cylinder diesel and six-cylinder petrol engine's. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive will be made available across the sedan and wagon body styles.
Whilst the full range has yet to be revealed, Holden has already announced three models: the Calais, VXR and Tourer, while an unannounced RS-V model was spied.
Commodore RS-V
During October 2017, an unannounced RS-V variant of the Commodore was spied alongside Calais and VXR liftback models by Wheels Magazine. Unlike the smaller Holden Astra hatch, which uses the same badge as the flagship model, the Commodore RS-V is believed to be the base performance model, sitting below the VXR, following the same formula of the previous SV6 & SS models on the VF Commodore. Meanwhile, a sport styled Sportwagon was spied testing in the USA by Australian motoring website CarAdvice.com, with the same design as the RS-V liftback spied back in Australia.
