The Hyundai Ioniq (a portmanteau of ion and unique) is a line-up of electric drive mid-size hatchbacks manufactured by Hyundai. The line-up includes a hybrid electric model, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid; an all-electric model, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric; and the Hyundai Ioniq Plug in, which might be an EREV or plug-in hybrid .
The Ioniq Hybrid was first revealed in South Korea in January 2016. The official debut of the three model line-up took place in the March 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The North American debut was at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. In November 2016, with an EPA rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (mpg-e) (1.7 L/100 km), the 2017 Ioniq Electric became the most efficient EPA-certified vehicle considering all fuels and of all years, surpassing the 2014–2016 model year BMW i3.
The Ioniq Hybrid was launched first in its home market in February 2016. The Ioniq Electric was released in South Korea in July 2016, and sold over 1,000 units during its first two months in the market.
At the 2017 Washington Auto Show, Hyundai announced the hybrid and EV versions will go on sale in the USA by April 1, 2017. The plug-in hybrid version will follow by September 1, 2017. Each Ioniq variant will be sold in all 50 states, but it will not be available in all Hyundai dealerships.
Hyundai expects to sell 30,000 hybrids globally in 2016, including 15,000 domestically, and 77,000 in 2017.
