Jaden (given name)

Gender Male
Language(s) English

Jayden is a given name that was rather obscure until 1994, when it debuted on the United States Social Security Administration's list of the 1,000 most popular boys' names at number 851. It became dramatically more popular among ethnic minorities in the United States thereafter with the naming of Will Smith's son Jaden (a variant of Jayden) in 1998.

The name in the form Jayden was not a top 1,000 name in the United States until 1994, when it ranked 850. A decade later, the rank had risen to 62, and it peaked at number 4 in 2011 with 16,979 births. The rank of Jayden as of 2016 is 27; variants that have peaked are Jaden (at 74 in 2007), Jaiden (at 171 in 2009), Jadyn (at 248 in 2005), Jadan (at 373 in 2003), and Jaidyn (at 559 in 2008).

Jadon the Meronothite appears in the Bible in Nehemiah 3:7. Though the use of variant spellings usually booms in the wake of the popularity of the orthodox version, in this case the converse is true; Jadon became popular only in the wake of Jayden, suggesting that it is not the source. For example, Jaden Smith's name is derived from his mother's, Jada. The name's sudden rise in usage comes from many places: J names have been historically liked by Americans and the popularity of two-syllable names ending in n has increased, as has the frequency of distinctive names.
