José Manuel Maza is a spanish lawyer, judge, criminologist and writer. Since November 2016, is the current Attorney General of Spain.

He has a degree in law, history and criminology by the Complutense University of Madrid. He joined the judicial career in 1975 and the attorney career in 1978, where he was the first of his promotion. He worked a few years as a lawyer and in concrete, he was the lawyer of the state-owned company Renfe. He is divorced and he has a child.

In the 90's he was the spokesman for the conservative association of judges "Unión Judicial Independiente" (UJI). During those years he became dean district judge in Madrid after having held the titularity of the courts of Alcorcón, Valencia and Cangas del Morrazo (Pontevedra). He was later president of the first section of the Madrid Provincial Court and in 2002 he was appointed magistrate of the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court ("Criminal Chamber"), replacing Adolfo Prego, who was appointed member of the CGPJ.

In addition to his daily work as a magistrate, he also writes books. He is the author of the "Handbook of Legal and Forensic Psychiatry", "Circumstances that exclude or modify Criminal Responsibility and Criminal Penalty Practices", as well as other publications related to Criminal Law and the links between law and medicine.

Within his work in the supreme, defended the disqualification of Judge Baltasar Garzón to open a cause that investigated the crimes of the Franco regime. In 2007 he pronounced against the Botín Doctrine that allowed to file the case against the ex-president of the Santander Group, Emilio Botín. He also voted against releasing the prisoner of ETA Ignacio Pujana, for the annulment of the Parot doctrine.
