Julia Jäkel (born November 13, 1971 in Mainz, Germany; married name Julia Jäkel-Wickert) is a German business executive. In 2012 she was appointed to the Executive Board of publishing house Gruner + Jahr, went on to be named head of the Board in 2013, and has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2015. The publishing house has been radically repositioned under her leadership, particularly through the development of digital products. Jäkel is a member of the Group Management Committee of Bertelsmann.
Jäkel was born in Mainz, Germany, in 1971. Both her parents and grandparents were doctors. After completing her Abitur (secondary education qualification, equivalent to A-Levels) at the Gutenberg School in Wiesbaden, Jäkel studied history, political science and economics at Heidelberg University and Harvard University. In 1996 she completed her studies with an MPhil in International Relations at the University of Cambridge.
She has been married to journalist Ulrich Wickert since 2003, and they now have two children.
In 1997, Jäkel participated in the Bertelsmann's Entrepreneurs Program before transferring to Gruner + Jahr. There she briefly was Managing Editor of Gala magazine. In 1999 she joined the team that established the Financial Times Deutschland, first serving as Deputy Managing Editor for the business newspaper, and going on to become Publishing Director of Financial Times Deutschland Editions in 2001. After five years at the Financial Times Deutschland Jäkel was promoted to Publishing Director of Brigitte magazine group in 2004.
