Julian Philips


Professor Julian Philips MA (Cantab) FGS was born in Wales in 1969. He was brought up in Warwickshire and studied Music at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Philips' works have been performed at many major music festivals including Tanglewood and at the Wigmore Hall by international artists such as Gerald Finley, Dawn Upshaw, Sir Thomas Allen, the Vertigo String Quartet, the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra and the BBC orchestras.

He has had a number of broadcasts and was the subject of a BBC Wales TV documentary.

Julian Philips took up the post of Head of Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2004. Since then, he has tutored at Cambridge University, lead adult learning programmes in conjunction with the Wigmore Hall and for the Orchestra of the Swan. In 2007, Philips was presented with an Honorary Fellowship from the Guildhall School.

Julian Philips is seen as one of the most versatile composers working today. He held the Glyndebourne's first Composer in Residence which has made his name firmly associated with the opera world. He is published by Edition Peters.

Whilst at Glyndebourne, Philips completed two chamber operas in 2006-2009, Followers with libretto by Simon Christmas and The Yellow Sofa with a libretto by Edward Kemp. His opera How the Whale Became was written for the 2013/14 Royal Opera House's Christmas season.

In 2007, Philips had finished his second Ballet The Snow Queen after writing a ballet based on Les Liaisons Dangereuses for the English National Ballet. His works have been featured many times on BBC radio.
