Zong left China for the United States to attend high school, and went on to graduate from Pepperdine University in 2004. She naturalized as a United States citizen, and spent some time living with her mother in San Marino, California. However, Chinese media reported in 2007 that she was in the process of applying to renounce U.S. citizenship. A notice confirming her loss of citizenship was published in the United States government's Quarterly Publication of Individuals Who Have Chosen to Expatriate in November 2010.
