Knut Vaage studied piano and composition at Bergen’s Grieg Academy and Oslo’s Norwegian Academy of Music. Vaage is active as a composer in several styles, including instrumental music, opera and theatre music, but the majority of his output is within improvised music and contemporary classical. Throughout his career, Vaage has established himself as a composer that explores the boundaries between improvisation and composition.

Key Vaage instrumental works include Movements for sinfonietta, one of several works commissioned and premiered by BIT20 Ensemble, and Transit, commissioned by the Ministry of Culture (France) and premiered by Ensemble Court-circuit. Vaage’s considerable orchestral output include works such as Skjulte songar, premiered by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Chaconne, Gardens of Hokkaido and Tjat, premiered by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Refleks, premiered by Orkester Norden, Cyclops, premiered by the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra as well as Mylder and Rite, premiered by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Key works for wind ensembles includes Graffiti for brass band and Breaking Another Wall. Graffiti earned Vaage the 2003 Edvard Prize.
