Lately is the third single released from Tyrese's first studio album Tyrese (1998). The single reached number 56 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 12 on the R&B chart. The song stayed on the Hot 100 chart for a total of thirteen weeks.
Tyrese performed the song at Music Mania 1999.
Anita Baker released a cover version of "Lately" to much acclaim on August 7, 2012, as the lead single from her forthcoming album, Only Forever. In 2013, Baker received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
"Lately" debuted at number 10 on the Urban Adult Contemporary radio chart, the highest debut in the last 15 years.
