The anime adaptation of Fairy Tail Zero is directed by Shinji Ishihara and produced by A-1 Pictures and Bridge. Based on a spin-off of the Fairy Tail manga, both written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima, the adaptation was included as the final season of the Fairy Tail anime series before its second hiatus. A prequel to the main series, Fairy Tail Zero depicts the events leading to the formation of the titular guild, focusing on the adventures of the guild's first master, Mavis Vermillion, and its other founding members. The season also adapts material from the 418 and 419th chapters of the main Fairy Tail series into its final two episodes, included in the manga's 49th volume, which continue events from the anime's seventh season.
The 12-episode season began airing in 2016 on January 9 and ended on March 26. Funimation simulcasted the series with a broadcast dub in North America. Three pieces of theme music were used for this season. The opening is "Ashita o Narase" (明日を鳴らせ, lit. "Ring in Tomorrow"), performed by Kavka Shishido, while the ending, "Landscape", is performed by Solidemo. For episode 277, the ending theme is "Masayume Chasing", performed by BoA.
