Paris Saint-Germain Football Club is a French professional association football club founded in 1970, and based in the city of Paris in France. The club's first team play in the highest tier of French football, the Ligue 1. Since its inception, Paris SG has had 26 managers.
Pierre Phelipon was the club's first manager, as well as the only player-manager in the history of Paris Saint-Germain. He immediately guided PSG to the French top-flight in 1971 after winning its maiden trophy, the Ligue 2 title. The club's longest-serving manager is Georges Peyroche, who led PSG to its first major titles with two consecutive French Cup wins in 1982 and 1983.
Paris SG were then crowned champions of France in 1986 with Gérard Houllier as manager. He delivered the national title to the French capital for the first time in 50 years. In the early 1990s, PSG clinched one French Cup and its second league crown under Portuguese manager Artur Jorge.
Then came former PSG player Luis Fernández. During his first spell, the club lifted both domestic Cups (French Cup and French League Cup) and the French Super Cup. However, his crowning glory was winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1996. In defeating Rapid Wien in the final, he became the only French manager to win a major European trophy with a French club.
Fernández's second spell wasn't as successful, though, with PSG only winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001. His time at the helm of the first team ended with a club-record 244 games managed. He was replaced by Ricardo, another former PSG player, who went on to guide the club to the domestic Cup double in 1998 and to the Cup Winners Cup final in 1997, losing to Barcelona.
