Gillespie County is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. It is named for Robert Addison Gillespie, a soldier in the Mexican-American War. The area was first home to the Tonkawa people, and was populated by Penateka Comanche in the mid-19th century. In 1845, German immigrants settled into the area. On December 15, 1847, a petition was submitted to create a county. In 1848, the legislature formed Gillespie County from Bexar and Travis counties.
