List of cities and towns in Iceland

This is a list of cities and towns in Iceland. Some cities, such as Hafnarfjörður and Akranes, are also municipalities. These municipalities would share the same name and attributes. However, most recognized municipalities consist of several cities or towns. Therefore, municipalities for which there is no city or town of the same name are not included here. In the case of Árborg, for example, the entries are the city of Selfoss and two towns – Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri. There are also a few municipalities in which there are no cities or towns, and are thus not included in the list below.

Although the English term has no legal definition in Iceland, settlements with populations in excess of 1,000 are generally considered to be cities. Cities shaded in pale green in the table are their respective regional capitals.

Iceland has two former cities. The population of Ólafsvík fell below 1,000 in 2016, and is now mostly thought of as a town. The city of Njarðvík was incorporated into neighboring Keflavík in 2010.

This is a partial and incomplete list of Icelandic towns and their populations. Sparsely settled areas or settlements with only a few hundred inhabitants are usually known as villages.
