World War II: The aircraft carrier was torpedoed and damaged near Gibraltar by U-81 ( Kriegsmarine). She capsized and sank the next day (36°03′N 4°45′W / 36.050°N 4.750°W / 36.050; -4.750) with the loss of one of her 1,487 crew.

World War II: The Queen Elizabeth-class battleship was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea off Alexandria, Egypt by U-331 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of 862 of her 1,311 crew.
