Māra Zālīte (born February 18, 1952) is a Latvian writer.

Mara Zalite was born in the city of Krasnoyarsk, in Siberia (Russia), where her family had been deported. In 1975 she graduated from the department of Philology at the University of Latvia (a former State University). Between years 1974 and 1989, Mara Zalite worked as a technical assistant at the Writers’ Union of Latvia, as a manager of the New Writers’ Studio and as a poetry consultant for the magazine “Liesma”. In 1989 she became a chief editor of the publishing house and magazine “Karogs”, a position she held until 2000, when she became a president of the Latvian Authors’ Association. She is also a trust member of the National Library Board, a member of the Copyright Advisory Council of The Ministry of Culture, a member of National Cultural Council, an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences, a member of the City Council of the Three-Star Order (since 1999), and a chairman of a State Language Commission (2002–2004). She has been awarded the Three Star Order, Commemorative Medal of Barricades and has received several literary prizes.
