Marcus Hutchins, also known online as MalwareTech, is a British computer security researcher known for temporarily stopping the WannaCry ransomware attack. He is employed by cybersecurity firm Kryptos Logic.
On 2 August 2017, Hutchins was arrested in the United States for allegedly creating a banking malware known as Kronos. He denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him on 4 August 2017. Hutchins has a court date in Milwaukee on August 8, 2017, postponed for August 14, 2017, and he was released from the Las Vegas jail.
Peter Heaton-Jones, the MP for North Devon, asked the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to provide consular assistance to Hutchins.
