The Merz Akademie is a non-profit, nationally accredited university for art, design, and media. It was founded by Albrecht Leo Merz in 1918. The original school was called the Werkshaus mit Werkschule and included a kindergarten, primary school and workshop. The curriculum was based on a philosophy of education that was characterized by a progressive and holistic approach.
The school was closed during the National Socialist era and opened again in 1947.
The Bachelor program in “Art, Design, and Media” is divided into three different majors: Film and video, visual communication, and new media. The school has traditionally had a heavy focus on research and experimental work integrating critical studies into design and art.
The Master program in “Research in Art, Design and Media” develops humanities research projects in the fields of film and video, design, art and new media.
Together with the , the Merz Akademie is active as a publisher of academic research.
