The Ministry of the Maritime Fleet (Minmorflot; Russian: Министерство морского флота СССР) was a government ministry in the Soviet Union.
Merchant Maritime Fleet of the USSR has abbreviation Morflot (English: Морфлот. All Soviet merchat fleet organizations and establishments obey to Ministry of the Maritime Fleet. It is why Ministry of the Maritime Fleet has abbreviation Mimmorflot (English: Минморфлот). Population of the Soviet Union and Soviet press often used abovementioned abbreviations. Populations and press of post-Soviet countries still use this abbreviations too.
Morflot of the USSR has history from 1922 to 1991 as Soviet Union was declared on December 29, 1922 and was collapsed in 1991. But Minforflot has more short history.
Until 25 May 1939, functions of the Ministry of Maritime Fleet USSR were carried out by the People's Commissariat of Water Transport of the USSR, which was responsible for both maritime and river fleets of the USSR.
The structure of the People's Commissariat of Maritime Fleet USSR as a separate people's commissariat was confirmed by a decree of the Council of Ministers USSR on 25 May 1939. On 15 March 1946, the People's Commissariat of Maritime Fleet USSR was changed to the Ministry of Maritime Fleet USSR by decree of the Supreme Soviet, at the time that all people's commissariats were changed to ministries.
March 15, 1953 Minmorflot was united with Ministry of River Fleet of the USSR in one Ministry: Ministry of Maritime and River Fleet of the USSR.
As per Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR dated August 25, 1954, The Ministry of Maritime and River Fleet of the USSR was re-established on August 25, 1954, when the Ministry of Maritime Fleet and Ministry of River Fleet of the USSR was divided again.
Minmorflot was liquidated on December 26, 1991 in connection with the termination of the existence of the USSR.
Ministry of the Maritime Fleet of the USSR is the head organization of Morflot. The main office of Ministry of the Maritime Fleet of the USSR was in Moscow.
