Neuralink is an American neurotechnology startup company founded by Elon Musk reported to be developing implantable brain–computer interfaces. The company was started in 2016, operates in California, and was first publicly reported in March 2017. The trademark for "Neuralink" was purchased from its previous owners in January 2017.
Musk did not respond to requests for comments when news of the company broke but the Wall Street Journal reported that people who had held discussions with the company said that it intended to first address difficult brain disorders like epilepsy and major depressive disorder and then pursue human enhancement.
Musk had discussed a science fiction technology called "neural lace" prior to forming the company and when news of the startup broke, the concept was discussed in the reports.
