Open edX is the open-source platform software developed by American online education actor EdX and made freely available to other institutions of higher learning that want to make similar offerings. On June 1, 2013, edX open sourced its entire platform.
The source code can be found on GitHub. An automated installation on Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit is available.
Major higher education institutions use the Open edX platform software to provide MOOC services onlines.
Companies also use Open edX as a tool to provide training to target populations. The "Mongo University", by example, use Open edX to provide training for its product, MongoDB. Mongo University is not an accredited university, but an online, free service to teach and learn advanced know-how.
