Phantom Thread is an upcoming American period drama film, set in London's couture world in the 1950s, shot, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville and Vicky Krieps. It is reportedly Daniel Day-Lewis's final performance in a film, following four decades in the profession. The music is composed by longtime Anderson collaborator and Radiohead member Jonny Greenwood. The film is set to be released on December 25, 2017. It is Thomas Anderson's first film to be set and filmed outside of the United States and his second collaboration with Day-Lewis after 2007's There Will Be Blood.
Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
On June 2, 2016, it was announced that Paul Thomas Anderson would write and direct a fashion drama film set in 1950s, with Daniel Day-Lewis attached as star.Megan Ellison would produce the film through Annapurna Pictures, along with JoAnne Sellar and Anderson. On September 8, 2016, the film was picked by Focus Features stateside and Universal Pictures internationally. In late January 2017, Lesley Manville, Richard Graham, and Vicky Krieps were also cast in the film.
