Montanier played as a goalkeeper for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 sides, including Caen, Nantes, Toulouse, Gueugnon and Saint-Étienne.
He managed US Boulogne from 2004 and was named Ligue 2 best manager in 2009. After achieving promotion to Ligue 1, he left Boulogne for Valenciennes FC.
Montanier was offered job as Spanish La Liga club Real Sociedad manager. He signed a two-year contract with the club on 4 June 2011.
On 21 May 2013 it was announced that he would not extend his contract at Real Sociedad, and join Stade Rennais at the end of the season.
