The community most likely was named after Godwin H. Powell, a businessperson in the coal-mining industry.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.4 square miles (13.9 km²), all of it land. Armstrong Creek and its tributary the Powellton Fork flow through Powellton.
