Robert P. Casey (teacher)

Robert P. Casey is a former Democratic Party politician from Pennsylvania.

Casey worked as a biology teacher for the Pittsburgh public school system and owned an ice cream shop in the city's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. He won the 1978 Democratic primary for the nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania in a crowded 14-way primary despite spending almost no money on his campaign, but went on to lose in the general election to William Scranton III. Casey the teacher's primary win was attributed to his sharing the same name as Robert P. Casey, a well known popular politician, who, that same year, ran for Governor of Pennsylvania but lost the Democratic primary to Pittsburgh Mayor Peter F. Flaherty.

In 1976, Robert E. Casey from Cambria County, won the nomination for Pennsylvania Treasurer largely due to due to positive name recognition of his forename and surname, although he was unrelated to the other Caseys. He won and served from 1977-81.
