Salamat is one of the 22 regions of Chad. The region's capital is Am Timan. The Salamat region's economy is based on subsistence agriculture, breeding, fishery and cotton. Salamat has been described as the "poorest region in the world" by the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and other sources.
The region's population was 308,605 inhabitants in 2009.
The main ethnico-linguistic groups are the Arabs (Salamats, Hemats, Rachids, Kolomats), the Kibets and the Roungas.
