Sleeping Giant is a 2015 Canadian drama film written and directed by Andrew Cividino. It premiered in the International Critics' Week section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and subsequently screened at festivals around the world, garnering critical acclaim.
The film stars Jackson Martin, Reece Moffett and Nick Serino as Adam, Nate and Riley, three young boys spending the summer together in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It is an expansion of a short film, of the same title, that Cividino made in 2013. The original short film version was a Canadian Screen Award nominee for Best Live Action Short Drama at the 3rd Canadian Screen Awards.
Guy Lodge wrote for Variety that the film is an "accomplished debut".TIFF praised the film, writing that it provides "a whip-smart look at the emotional extremes of adolescence and their tragic potential, and is one of the most finely observed debuts to come from Canada in recent memory."
The film currently holds a 7.1/10 on Metacritic and an 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film won the award for Best Canadian First Feature Film at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and also won the Vancouver International Film Festival award for Best Canadian Film. In December, the film was announced as part of TIFF's annual Canada's Top Ten screening series of the ten best Canadian films of the year.
