Spittal is a hamlet or small village in East Lothian, Scotland, UK, on the B1377, east of Longniddry, south-south-west of Aberlady and to the west of Garleton and north of Gladsmuir. It is close to both Redhouse Castle, Gosford House and Spittal House.

The placename "Spittal" suggests a religious community running a pilgrim's hostel or hospice.

The beaches, one of Spittal's main attractions have recently been criticized for having poor water quality. East Lothian News reports that a main contributor to this could be the recent pollution of the River Tweed which is a main tributary to the Spittal coastal waters. As the only beach in the Northern region classified as poor, Spittal officials are scrambling to find solutions to the pollution issue.

(I think that the Spittal referred to in the paragraph above is the Spittal just south of the river Tweed, near Berwick, in England. The hamlet of Spittal in East Lothian is not next to the sea).
