Superpedestrian manufactures and sells its own brand of electric bicycle wheel, known as the Copenhagen Wheel. When outfitted with a Copenhagen Wheel, a regular bicycle becomes a pedelec, an electric hybrid that can be pedaled manually and also be powered electrically, reaching speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.
The original prototype for the Copenhagen Wheel was invented at MIT's Senseable City Lab in partnership with the city of Copenhagen, before being commercialized as Superpedestrian Inc.
The company is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Superpedestrian has 1 retail store at its headquarters, and the electric bicycle wheels are sold at more than 120 stores globally.
In October 2017, Superpedestrian announced a new production facility in the Netherlands, making the Copenhagen Wheel generally available in the UK and across Europe.
The company has raised more than $27 million in venture capital investment, from investors including Cambridge-based General Catalyst and Spark Capital.
The Copenhagen Wheel, a rear bicycle wheel that contains a built-in electric motor, battery, computer, and sensor array inside the red hub, was unveiled in December 2009 at the COP15 United Nations Climate Conference.
In 2012, the technology used in the Copenhagen Wheel was spun off into a commercial company, Superpedestrian Inc.
Besides selling the Copenhagen Wheel separately, Superpedestrian also retails three of its own-brand "Wheel + Bike" models.
The Trousers is a "Dutch inspired" city bike, equipped with a single speed Copenhagen Wheel. It comes in two sizes, Small (52cm) and Regular (57cm).
The Skinny Jeans is a powder coated CRMO steel track bike that is paired with a single speed Copenhagen Wheel. It is available in four sizes, 49cm, 52cm, 55cm and 58cm.
The Kilt is a "Dutch-style step-thru" upright city bike, equipped with a single speed Copenhagen Wheel. It is available in two sizes, Small (43cm) and Regular (48cm).
