The First Purge is an upcoming American dystopian action horror film directed by Gerard McMurray and written by James DeMonaco. It is a prequel to 2013's The Purge and is the fourth installment in The Purge franchise. The film stars Y'Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei. It is scheduled to be released on July 4, 2018 by Universal Pictures.
In 2018, in order to push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
In September 2016, James DeMonaco, the creator of the franchise stated that the fourth film would be a prequel to the trilogy, and it would show how the United States got to the point of accepting the Purge Night. On February 17, 2017, it was reported that DeMonaco had officially announced that a fourth installment in The Purge franchise and a sequel to 2016 film The Purge: Election Year was in development at Universal Studios. DeMonaco would not return as director instead he would be writing the script, while Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions and Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes would be back to produce the film with Sebastien Lemercier.
